Not about the destination

UCT first year - part 2  It was such a blessing that Garth was at UCT too, he was in res called Leo Marquard. He had formed friendships with guys and girls from all over the country and because we were studying the same thing I would see him in lectures, and through him I was introduced to people, some of who became my friends too. Orientation week was a gas. I had come from a little town where the most happening place was a club called TransParadise… I can still hear "I'm giving you love for love" and "Dreams Can Come True" ringing out, so this was big city lights. When not in res, I'd be strolling to Naughty's to listen to Francois perform downstairs, or over to Lloyds for Brown Eyed Girl. I never drank back then, but drinks were cheap and people would get properly liquored and have a whale of a time, as would I through observation.   FIRST YEAR - PART 1 It has been a while between drinks hasn't it. I have been meaning to recount these tales for a while but being back in Cape Town for the past few months strengthened the desire. I was fortunate enough to turn 50 during this time and honoured to celebrate with so many people from all of life's stages. Nine weeks later I still look back at the room and feel nothing but humility…emotional really, that you would take time out of your day, for some even more than a day, to come and hang. What truly made it special was that my day ones were there, my dear 80-year-old folks and my siblings. They say it takes a village to raise a child but it sure takes one to get a guy to 50, so thank you.
